359/365 - December 24, 2012 - Christmas Eve
Favourite part of Christmas Eve. The nights that we have dinners with the family changes, but one thing remains the same – The Night Before Christmas. Jeff’s dad reads it every year, and everyone tries their best to make it for story time. Even when traveling, phone calls are made so that all can hear the story.

360/365 - December 25, 2012 - Morning
Morning. Christmas involves a lot of back and forth, between my family and Jeff’s. We start the morning off with my family, where we open gifts and gorge on delicious food. At Jeff’s family’s place, we… open gifts and gorge on food. Pretty standard, now that I think about it! It’s hectic but awesome to spend so much time with family.

The dogs got to open their gifts first. Sophie was so excited that we couldn’t get her to sit before getting her treats.

361/365 - December 26, 2012 - Grateful
Grateful. I know that this is an odd picture for the theme of grateful… but it was a project made with gratitude! I made this sewing machine cover for my new sewing machine, that my parents bought me. They got me two things that I’ve wanted for a long time, but would have taken a long time to get around to buying. I was so lucky to have received so many thoughtful gifts from people this year. I hope that the gifts I gave made people as happy as I was!

366/365 - December 31, 2012 - Fun
Fun. My last picture! This is Deathblade. He’s not ours. We found him while we were walking. We were worried about him, what with all the cars on the road, the cold, the dark and all the coyotes that live nearby. He’s fat and fluffy and tagless. We brought him home to keep him safe and have posted information on the nearby vet’s facebook page, called the SPCA and posted signs in the neighborhood. It’s fun because it’s novel. This is the only way we can have a cat in the house – Jeff claims that all cats hate him and he hates all cats. Except for Deathblade, apparently. Maybe because Jeff named him Deathblade.

348/365 - December 13, 2012 - "Family"
Family. Since I didn’t get to see my immediate family today, I decided to take a step away from the next most obvious thing (Jeff and the dogs) and use this shot I took at a field trip. It’s my extended work family… sort of. Give me a break. I was horribly stuffed up, light-headed and cough-y today.

Favourite Holiday Song. So, one of my make-me-happy holiday songs is “All I want for Christmas” by Mariah Carey. It’s just so upbeat. How fortunate for me that Jeff gave me my engagement ring last night – I could use the theme (which I find more challenging) as an excuse to show off my new ring! Jeff designed it, with the help of Simon at Astranova Jewellery. It’s perfect!

Outside Christmas lights
. When I took the dogs outside at 2, it was clear. A little chilly, a little windy, but clear. When I went outside to take this picture, it was not quite so nice… so I got a little lazy. I didn’t play around with angles, zoom or even exposure time. Oops. When Jeff and I do our Christmas light tour, I will do my best to take more creative pictures!

Presents. Sort of. Don’t they look like presents? These were some of the delicious looking cookies (I haven’t tasted them yet) that were at the cookie exchange. I tried this recipe. It turned out pretty well, if I do say so myself! Added bonus? I only have to double the batch to have enough cookies!

343/365 - December 8, 2012 - Ornament(s)
Ornament(s). This was a gift from Jeff’s mom, one of her craft fair finds. Our little tree consists mainly of ornaments that she’s given us over the years. We have traditional ornaments that we have bought, but the ones she gives us are so much fun. This one, for example, has a little skin showing. I – without fail – try to tug on her robe, despite the fact that it’s glued into place – every year.

So, belatedly, I decided to try this photo challenge after my friend Steve posted his. I’ve missed two days, but I’m starting now. Here’s RED! It’s my snowman, a gift from a former student. 339/365 - December 4, 2012 - Joyous
Today’s theme? Joyous! I took several pictures of a student of mine who is always full of joy. She kept making silly faces and then bursting into laughter. It’s funny what students think. After I took the pictures, she wondered aloud, “I wonder if Madame is going to look back at our year and remember how weird we were.” Another student added, “Just watch. Madame will retire from teaching after this year.” I guess they don’t realize just how much fun it is to have students with so much personality and how much I enjoy their uniqueness!

A bit of a last minute shot. This is of a book in “The Giver” series. I study it with my students every year. I usually have students who have already read The Giver, but rarely have they read the other two books in the companion series – Gathering Blue and Messenger. This year, I have one who has read all three. Luckily for me, Lois Lowry published the fourth companion book this year. I told that student that she wasn’t allowed to read it until later and ordered it. Phew.

So, Jeff’s phone stopped working and the car started acting funny, all at the same time. I gave him my phone for the day, since I didn’t want him to be stranded without a phone if the car conked out on him. Luckily, the car was fixed with minor repairs and the phone has been sent off to be replaced or fixed, and Jeff has a loaner.

Went hiking up the Chief today with Jeff and the dogs. We decided to try the second peak, as we’ve already done the first. It was a fair bit steeper and we hit one sketchy patch where the dogs weren’t able to climb the rock on their own. Luckily, two hikers stopped to help us daisy chain the dogs up. Because of that part, we decided to continue on past the third peak, where we could loop around. It was certainly longer – and more difficult, but a lot of fun. And gorgeous!

Student memoirs. I posted on Facebook saying that I was marking student memoirs and I had a number of people question what 12 year olds are doing writing memoirs. Well, in my defense, it’s more about voice than the actual memoir. Proof? This one was about a student’s experience as a monitor – this year. It was terrific. Granted, they aren’t all terrific, but this one was worth the assignment!

NOT Baby Challupa’s work, but another student who has questionnable handwriting. The poor kid gets “the look” from every student in the class when I specify that work needs to be legible. To be fair, this student’s work is the only one – in all 9 years of teaching – where I can’t decipher the words on a regular basis. Most times, I can make an educated guess based on context, but this student’s context is often smudged and not fully formed. I wish I could figure out more of what this student is saying, since there usually is some wisdom included!

Went for my first run since the half. My leg is still bothering me, but I’m impressed at how much my endurance has improved. I did a short run – one that I did frequently before I trained for the half. By the time I used to get to the end, I was ready to walk! This time, I got past where I normally stop to walk and could have continued on. I guess running for almost two and a half hours puts a 30 minute run into perspective! I took this shot before I headed in to cool down and warm up (you know, cool down from the run but warm up from the cold air!) and to watch the Remembrance Day ceremonies on TV. After I did that, I spent a whole day marking, marking, and marking. But now I’m done until Tuesday! Woo hoo!
